On Water PARCOURS is a series of events organised by the Knowledge Exchange Office of the BUA. Along Berlin's waterways and in cultural institutions, it combines art, science and urban society.
The focus is on the role water plays in the sustainable future of the city. Interactive formats link research and everyday life, bring hydrological relationships to life and opening up new perspectives on the element of water.
The Parcours invites visitors to discover, participate and explore, transforming Berlin into a living water laboratory. It creates spaces where knowledge is shared, cooperation is promoted and impetus is given for a sustainable urban society.

The On Water PARCOURS offers a wide range of formats to promote exchange between the BUA's water research and urban society. Instead of traditional lectures or purely scientific discourse, the focus is on participatory and sensory experiences. Visitors are invited to actively immerse themselves in workshops on the riverbank, performances in urban spaces, or artistic interventions that interrupt everyday life and provide new food for thought.
A central concern is to bring together different forms of knowledge. In addition to scientific findings, aesthetic, everyday practical and local perspectives are also incorporated. In this way, knowledge is not only imparted, but also jointly generated in dialogue between experts, artists and urban society. This expanded understanding of knowledge also encompasses physical and emotional experiences, thus opening up new approaches to the topic of water.
The artistic contributions are not decorative accessories, but integral components. Whether sound experiments with algae, edible sculptures made from moorland landscapes or performative walks along the River Spree – such unusual approaches provoke, stimulate reflection and make complex ecological relationships tangible in a sensory way.
This diversity creates an open laboratory space in which water can be approached from a wide variety of angles. In cooperation with cultural institutions and museums of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, PARCOURS creates opportunities to experience familiar places in the city in new ways, to take surprising perspectives and to recognise water as a formative element of urban life.
The concept focuses on interaction, collaboration and experimentation. Each event is an impulse that is intended to have an impact beyond the moment – by raising questions, initiating discussions and enabling new alliances between science, art and urban society. In this way, Berlin becomes a testing ground for innovative forms of learning and joint action around the resource of water.

Am 29. November 2025 laden das ZK/U Berlin – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik und das Knowledge Exchange Office der Berlin University Alliance im Rahmen der Reihe On Water | Parcours zu einem ganztägigen Programm ein, das Kunst, Wissenschaft und Stadtgesellschaft in den Dialog über Klimaanpassung und Resilienz bringt.

Zum Spätsommerfest in der Roof Water-Farm lud das On Water Programm am 22. September ein und machte so einen weiteren Berliner Wasserort für die Teilnehmenden zugänglich. Mitten im städtischen Trubel erlebten die Gäste einen Ort, an dem Zukunftsfragen praktisch erfahrbar werden.

Am 21. und 22. Juni realisierte Art Laboratory Berlin das zweitägige Festival BODIES OF WATER, das sich im Rahmen der laufenden Reihe ON WATER | PARCOURS der Berliner Universitätsallianz (BUA) mit Themen rund um urbane Wasserwege beschäftigte. Gemeinsam mit dem Art-Science-Kollektiv DIY Hack the Panke und Wissenschaftler:innen aus den Bereichen Ökohydrologie und Medizin erkundete das Publikum, welche Formen ein urbaner Fluss annehmen kann und was in und an der Panke lebt.

Am Sonntag, den 4. Mai, wurde die Spree selbst zum Denkraum: Zum ersten Mal verlagerte sich der ON WATER | PARCOURS buchstäblich aufs Wasser – an Bord eines solarbetriebenen Seminarboots, das zur schwimmenden Forschungsstation für aquatische Zukünfte wurde. Zu dieser multiperspektivischen Reise auf der Spree lud die Berlin University Alliance gemeinsam mit dem re:future lab und dem Exzellenzcluster Matters of Activity zu einem besonderen Tag des Mitdenkens und Mitgestaltens auf Berlins größter Wasserstraße ein.

Am 22. März 2025 fand im Humboldt-Labor die erste gemeinsame Veranstaltung der Veranstaltungsreihen ON WATER | DIALOGE und ON WATER | PARCOURS der Berlin University Alliance statt. Im Fokus standen die drängenden Fragen rund um Wasserknappheit, Klimawandel und nachhaltiges Wassermanagement in Berlin-Brandenburg.

Was haben die Algen im Müggelsee und das Axolotl im Labor mit dem Zusammenleben in Berlin zu tun? Die Erkundungen der Berliner Hydrosphäre starteten am 6. Dezember 2024 im Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseum und der dortigen Ausstellung “Lygophilia: Aquatic Life” von Robertina Šebjanič. Diese ist vom bedrohten Axolotl und weiteren aquatischen Lebewesen inspiriert und erforscht das Thema der mehr-als-menschlichen Koexistenzen im Wasser.
